There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well. ~Walter Reuther

The rainy season is starting.  There are many houses still in need of repairs from the hurricanes.  We have been doing our best to help build and repair houses, but we can get them all done.  Juberson (was in the RC for awhile) lives in this house.  We are trying to put a tin roof on his house.  That's a piece of plastic hanging over the bed to protect it.

Here are some photos of the USNS Comfort mobile team doing some teaching for our staff.

your weblog encourages me to hold on to my dream workin' as a nurse in africa one day. thank you!
after travellling a lot in eastern africa, and educated myself to be a nurse, i know i have just that final step to do.. i wonder how you got started? did you start your own project? my friends in nairobi tell me its easy to get a job in some hospital, but i dream of workin' in the rural areas.. how did you do it? :)

@zootzoot - Glad to hear that you have an interest in nursing in the third-world.  I got started by visiting Haiti as a teen.  I came as often as I could after my parents moved here (my sophomore year of college) and helped at a clinic my mom started.  After she died, I started running the clinic.

Don't start out on your own.  Work for/with someone else for a time to gain experience in nursing there, culture, etc.  If the opportunity arises for you to venture out on your own after a few years, investigate every angle to see if it is a good fit for you.  The first years are ones of learning and it's best to learn from someone's mistakes and victories, rather than to go it alone.
